Liverpool University Faculty of Engineering
The faculty of Engineering is one of the largest departments in the university, and is duly one of the largest engineering departments in the country, offering a huge number of courses. The Department of Engineering offers courses such as civil, aerospace & mechanical engineering, and variants of, including foundation year courses; whilst the department of electrical engineering and electronics offers more specialised courses in those fields. In recent years the term "The Liverpool Engineer," has been coined, and refers to engineers going through their studies in the university at present. These students benefit not only from expert teaching and experience in their chosen field of specialisation, but also of all the other fields; a huge benefit to the engineering industry of tomorrow.
The LESS, or Liverpool Engineers Student Society, is the Engineers Society, and the society often organises social events for engineering students of all shapes and sizes, whether that be paintballing or a formal ball. The LESS and other engineering students alike are often susceptible to banter by medical students, and this is often a two way thing. The rivalry between the engineers and the medics, (Whose society is called the LMSS), is often intense.
Notable teaching figures in the department of engineering include Dr. Daniel Walker, well known for his vast knowledge of mechanics, aerodynamics and flight systems & Prof. Marcel Escudier, world renowned for his teachings on Fluid Mechanics.
Undergraduate Programmes
Choosing a degree programme can be a difficult decision to make. There are so many factors to consider. Which programme should I choose? What do the various programmes involve? What are the entry requirements? These pages cannot claim to answer all your questions, but we hope to answer some of them and help you to make the right decision while giving you a brief introduction to engineering at The University of Liverpool.
The Faculty offers a wide range of undergraduate programmes.
You can find more information of each programme on the Departments' websites.
Engineering
To be a Chartered Engineer, you must either obtain an accredited BEng(Hons) degree followed by a period of additional learning or an accredited MEng (Hons) degree. You can study virtually every type of engineering in the Department of Engineering. All the disciplines are related - here is how they differ:
Aerospace Engineers carry out the specialist application of engineering skills to the aerospace sector.
Civil Engineers are responsible for the design, project management and construction of the physical infrastructure of our society: bridges, roads, airports, harbours, hospitals, power stations and water supply systems.
Integrated Engineers work out the integration of the complexities of mechanical and electrical engineering systems.
Laser Engineers work at the forefront of manufacturing engineering using optical energy for advanced material processing.
Materials Science Engineers focus on the materials used both in the construction of these products and in the machines used to manufacture them.
Mechanical Engineers look at the design, development and manufacture of the machines and mechanical systems that are central to our lives in the society.
Electrical Engineering and Electronics
The MEng is an enhanced BEng programme, which means that you have an extra year to study advanced topics and undertake a group project based on the needs of the industry.
If you have an interest in the design of electronic circuits, a degree in Electronics will interest you. Electrical machines and power generation and distribution are covered by degrees in Electrical Engineering. Or you may choose to study both subjects with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Electronics. The Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics offers several degrees for those students with a particular interest in circuit engineering, computer science or medical applications. For those students who don't have the required entry qualifications, we offer two four-year degrees.
