Student Times looks over four of the most anticipated movies in May

We all know the man of steel, but this summer cinema goers will meet a man clad in iron. However, Robert Downy Jr will not be the only star to grace the screen in one of many blockbusters. Some of the returning favourites include four not-so-single Manhattan girls and an ageing archaeologist with a whip.

Son of Rambow takes no prisoners

When some people first hear the title Son of Rambow, they conjure up nightmarish visions of Sylvester Stallone passing on the baton to some illegitimate love child so the series can run forevermore. Well, worry not.

Review: Bender’s back baby!

“We’re back baby” screams Bender at the beginning of this new feature-length Futurama adventure, starring all our old friends (and Zoidberg). But will the crew be able to save the world, even with the Professor sciencing as fast as he can?

Review: Horton’s adventure with the Whos is well worth a watch

Just as the Snowman, Willow the Whisp, Trap Door and Danger Mouse are part of all of our childhoods, Charlie Brown and Dr Seuss are part of US children’s culture. But even if you do like green eggs and ham, don’t be put off by Dr Seuss’ fanciful tales, one of which has now been turned into a movie by the people behind that furry, nut-mad squirrel Scratch from Ice Age.

MOVIE OF THE MONTH:
U23D

A sea of 3D goggles and smiling faces...

For an experience like no other, I highly recommend U23D at the IMAX. Enjoy high voltage entertainment whilst keeping your buttocks comfortably seated and scoffing down a large popcorn and coke.

DVD OF THE MONTH:
Eastern Promises

When thinking of London, most people conjure up images of the West End, glitzy galas and fabulous festivals. Review: All the Boys Love Mandy Lane

Cover your eyes (that is if they have not been cut out by a killer) because when you watch a film as gory as All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, even you hardcore slasher fans might cringe occasionally.

Having won a slew of awards and riding on a wave of critical acclaim and positive audience feedback, Juno arrived in UK cinemas in early February. But is it really as good as everyone is saying?

FILM OF THE MONTH:
Sweeney Todd

4/5 Stars

Tim Burton and Jonny Depp serve up a sleek slice of gothic horror. Though the story of the Demon Baber is, for many people, relatively familiar, Sweeney Todd is still genuinely frightening, with a haunting Stephen Sondheim's soundtrack, lifted directly from the stage version and cinematography as dark and devilishly delightful as Marilyn Manson in a moonlit graveyard.

FILM OF THE MONTH: American Gangster (2007)

IN WHAT is perhaps the most audacious smuggling operation in history, 70s drugs kingpin Frank Lucas used the coffins of ill-fated US soldiers to shift heroin from war-torn Vietnam to the States. Denzel Washington makes no apologies as the visionary, real-life American Gangster in director Ridley Scott’s sharply riveting crime saga. And with Russell Crowe playing the ramshackle detective on Lucas’ case, it’s a guaranteed shot of pure heart-pumping entertainment.
