Camp America
So you're one of these strange types who doesn't loathe American kids and want to visit the US but don't have piles of ready cash?
Why not get yourself a job at Camp America and combine a summer of pre-pubescent angst (theirs not yours) with a spot of free travel?
Camp America recruits 8000 young people each year from round the world to help run its 12,000 summer camps. The camps offer loads of different activities for kids aged six to 16, who you'll be supervising.
You'll be interviewed and expected to work hard in the camp for a minimum of nine weeks; on the upside, though, you get full board and a small wage (and we mean small). Jobs range from camp counsellor to plumbing to looking after horses.

Au pair work
Looking after screaming, snot-nosed kiddies might be what springs to mind when you think au pair, but few jobs teach a foreign language and show you different cultures like this one.
You'll need basic language skills, and you'll be expected to have a bit of childcare experience like baby-sitting, caring for younger brothers or sisters etc.
You'll get time to study the language at a local college, but you're expected to work 25-30 hours per week, with up to two days off. You'll help with light housework, childcare and baby-sitting, get free board and lodging and the equivalent of £45 to £55 per week.
There are plenty of agencies offering excellent international placements – choose one from the International Au Pair Association.
These agencies have all agreed to stick to a code of conduct to ensure that both the au pair and the host family get a fair deal. And who knows, those snot-nosed kids might be angels after all.
