“Studentification” of town centres to be fought
GOVERNMENT LAST month announced plans to combat the concentration of students living in one area, as it often means mass departures over summer. Under the proposal, so-called Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), often used by students as well as new immigrants and young professionals, would not be allowed to concentrate in the one area as currently is the case.

Union bar now almost
a year late reopening
EIGHT MONTHS after the proposed deadline, a London University is yet to reopen its Union bar following a multimillion – pound refurbishment. Work is currently underway at Queen Mary, University of London’s Student Union, redeveloping the student union bar Drapers, converting what was once offices into a brand new health and fitness centre as well as creating
additional prayer rooms
for students.

RBS trialled for
environmental crimes
THE ROYAL Bank of Scotland was recently found guilty of environmental crimes in a mock trial conducted by protest group People & Planet.
Over 50 students gathered on the day of the bank’s annual general meeting to bring attention to the loans they granted to environmentally unfriendly projects. A disputed loan was granted to energy giant E.ON to build a coal power plant in Kent. This would be the first such plant constructed in the UK in 30 years.

Minister ignores rise in student complaints
MINISTER FOR Higher Education Bill Rammell has dismissed recent figures showing growing dissatisfaction amoung University students.
Complaints to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education have gone up significantly – by almost 25%. The complaints were made by students unhappy with their final
exam results.

UNIVERSITY STUDENTS may have to sign new contracts laying down the way they are allowed to dress and behave. The contracts are being branded as “charters” and could be non-negotiable, leaving students with little choice if they want to attend the University
