A research degree (Master (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) involves training in research methods and the execution of a piece of supervised research - the systematic high level study of a problem or topic and the presentation of the results in the form of a written thesis. If the research degree programme involves a collaborating establishment an external supervisor may be appointed from the establishment. Candidates studying through the distance learning mode will also have a local supervisor, based near the area in which they are studying.
