Over 3,000 new tickets in all new student offer at the Royal Opera House

In an all new student offer, tickets priced between £2 and £20 will be available to students in the expanded Royal Opera House Student Standby Scheme, as well as standing tickets for every main stage production, and the continuation of the hugely successful £10 Student Standby Tickets.

The scheme, free to join by visiting www.roh.org.uk/studentstandby , gives students the opportunity to experience live opera and ballet performances at overdraft-friendly prices. There are three different ways for students to enjoy performances at the world famous Royal Opera House:

£10 Student Standby tickets
Students signed up to the Student Standby Scheme are offered £10 tickets to select performances by The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet up to 24 hours prior to the performance. Tickets are available on a first come first served basis.

£2-£20 Amphitheatre tickets
In a new addition, the entire Amphitheatre is reserved exclusively for students for two operas and two ballets this Season; La traviata on 6 December 2011, Don Giovanni on 21 February 2012, Romeo and Juliet on 16 January 2012 and New Scarlett triple bill, a programme of cutting-edge contemporary ballet, on 18 April 2012. A special menu for students will be available in the Amphitheatre Bar on these four nights.

£5-£15 Standing place ballot tickets
Another new initiative for this Season is the ‘standing place ballot’. 22 standing places will be available for one performance from each production throughout the Season. Students selected through the ballot will be able to buy their tickets before they are on sale to the general public.

All students who have registered with the Royal Opera House will, upon graduation, be added to the Royal Opera House Graduate list. This will enable graduates to still have access to appropriate offers for live performance throughout the period of transition from student to employee.

Tony Hall, Chief Executive at ROH said: “I still remember my first experience of the Royal Opera House as a student sitting up in the Amphitheatre and being overwhelmed by seeing live opera in such a wonderful building as the Royal Opera House. So it’s perhaps why I’m particularly excited that we’re able to offer more tickets to students this year than ever before through our Student Standby scheme thanks to the generosity of Costas and Evi Kaplanis and the Robey Family. It is part of a plan, together with new initiatives for Young Friends of the ROH, to make the ROH the most welcoming and open place for young opera and ballet lovers and for those who are curious and open to experience these art forms, performed at the very highest level. I hope that these opportunities for students to come to the Opera House and experience opera and ballet for themselves will give them something they can take with them throughout their lives.”

Costas and Evi Kaplanis, supporters of the scheme said: “We are supporting this initiative because it will expose the younger generation to two of the greatest art forms at one of the greatest opera houses in the world and hopefully these young people will develop a passion for it.”

Simon Robey, Royal Opera House Chairman added: “This new initiative, which I and Costas and Evi Kaplanis have pleasure in supporting, is designed to make the most extraordinary work of the ROH accessible on a much larger scale than before to a generation of students”.

ROH has also launched the new Insiders scheme for those aged 16-30, to give young people a chance to become a ‘Young Friend’ of the Royal Opera House. For a membership fee of £50 a year, Royal Opera House Insiders receive priority booking to all performances, a quarterly magazine, About the House, and regular e-newsletter updates.

Insiders can also attend Insight events to learn more about the Royal Opera House and will be invited to five exclusive events across the Season, including a backstage tour of the Royal Opera House.

It is possible to be both a Royal Opera House Insider and a member of the Student Standby Scheme, however to be included on the Graduate List you must first be a member of the Student Standby Scheme. Students can join the Student Standby Scheme for free at www.roh.org.uk/studentstandby . An accredited student card is needed when collecting tickets. Those interested in becoming an Insider can join online at www.roh.org.uk/support/insiders/index.aspx. Proof of age, such as a passport photocopy, is necessary to demonstrate eligibility for membership.
