Students to race their car designs round Silverstone

If you’ve ever fancied racing around Silverstone, then now’s your chance.
Racing event Formula Student is offering students from as far away as Canada to as close to home as Cambridge the chance to race around the legendary Formula One track in cars built and designed by them. The event, which takes place on 16-19 July 2009, has been running for over a decade.
Organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, it challenges those taking part to use their engineering skills in an everyday environment, while also gaining much-needed firsthand experience. Argued John Wood, chairman of the event: “Everybody is aware that these are difficult times in the economic cycle and the need to develop excellent engineers has never been more important. Formula Student is unique in that it offers students the chance to hone their skills in an exciting and stimulating environment.”
Last year, a new category was added where students were challenged to design their own racing car running on alternative fuels, such as hydrogen. So far, five teams have entered the Class 1A category this year.
“Today, more than ever before, we look at Formula Student as being a deciding factor in employing engineering graduates.

It encompasses everything they need to know in order to demonstrate engineering expertise,” argued Team Principal at Renault Formula One Pat Symonds.
So far, over 80 teams have signed up for the event, with registration closing at the end of March. For more information, go to the
Formula Student's website.
