Southampton Night Life

Not only is Southampton a place of culture, but it is a vibrant city with a wide range of cosmopolitan nightlife.

Whether you want to party the night away with friends or have a quiet drink and watch the world go by, you will find a venue to suit your needs

The length and breadth of city’s high street, is packed with a variety of pubs and bars, many of which offer a variety of drinks promotions throughout the week. Up in the Polygon area of the city, which has a large student population, you will find some of the coolest bars on offer, including the Vodka Revolution, the Orange Rooms (, Avondale, and the Varsity ( (Links will open in a new browser window).

When the bars close, there are some great nightclubs to move onto, catering for a vast range of tastes, with anything from house, garage, R’n’B, rock and alternative and club and chart favourites.

Southampton is home to one of the biggest super clubs in the UK. Oceana Southampton opened in July 2008 in the Leisureworld entertainment complex, replacing popular night clubs Ikon and Diva.

With a capacity of 3,000 Oceana has two nightclubs, five bars, VIP rooms and a restaurant. Each room is based on themes including New York, Monte Carlo, Tahiti, Paris, Louisiana, Milan and the Icelandic capital Reykjavik.

Back in the Polygon area, Reflex plays some wicked cheesy tunes while the Rhino club, which gave Artful Dodger and Craig David their big break, offers the best in UK garage, dance and funky beats. There are also a number of smaller nightclubs and late night bars throughout the city, that offer a fantastic night out, whatever your taste in music.

Southampton is a safe city but it is wise to take sensible precautions to look after yourself. The University is committed to making your stay in Southampton a safer and more enjoyable one and to demonstrate this, the role of the Police Higher Education Liaison Officer (HELO) has been created. This role is to liase with students, the Students’ Union  and members of staff concerned with your welfare.

This facility was started to enable you to talk to a police officer about sensitive issues or concerns that you may have, without having to attend the Police station. There are also dedicated Police Liaison Surgeries held at the University on regular basis to discuss any problems students may have, ensuring your time here is safe and enjoyable.

A hotspot for trendsetters and fashionistas, Junk is a club for the serious clubbers of Southampton.
